It is frustrating when political debacles suddenly cause bad things to happen to innocent by standers.
Poor Planned Parenthood has come under a lot of backlash and threats of losing financial support after House Republicans have places the organization under investigation – for offering abortion services in some locations. All of the negative attention has over shadowed the positive planned parenting skills and service that Planned Parenthood provides, to everyone – low income or not.
Along with your typical family planning, pap smears and birth control Planned Parenthood also offers a screening that has been called “life-saving” by Senator Barbara Boxer of California. For the last five years Planned Parenthood has offered breast cancer screenings, “life-saving breast cancer screenings,” with the financial assistance of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
That was until Tuesday.
Komen pulled their support and severed their ties with Planned Parenthood in an announcement that was released on Tuesday. Their reason? Well, Komen is severing their ties with Planned Parenthood because it is currently “under investigation by Congress,” an investigation that was prompted by anti-abortion advocacy organizations.
While Koman is facing a lot of backlash from those who once supported them (by making monetary donations to the Susan G Koman for the Cure), Planned Parenthood has seen a lot of support within the first 24 hours of the announcement. Since Komen severed the tie, well, Planned Parenthood has seen a flood of donations; donations that at 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 01, totaled at $400,000 from about 6,000 donors.
Whether you are pro-life or not does not matter here, women’s health is at the core of this issue and Planned Parenthood does more than it is acknowledged for to keep women healthy.
